Face-to-Face or by Phone - it's up to you.

One of the most important things about achieving your goals and having a great year is knowing where you are going and what you really want.  After all, if you don't know where you're going you're unlikely to ever get there!

As human beings we often struggle with change.

The fact is, your brain is programmed to work in the same way, repeating patterns that are normal and comfortable to you.  When you're seeking change, you often find yourself wondering why you really want to do something different.  It's typical to start off great then find yourself stepping back into old ways.  That's normal because it takes time and effort to step out of your comfort zone and make 2018 your best year yet.  But I just know you can do it.

We also live in a world of all or nothing extremes and that influences how we think.  It's common to feel that you need to either be doing everything at once or doing nothing.  Many people feel that they have to be in control, and that if they're not in control, they are out of control.  These people constantly ask themselves I am right or I am wrong?

If this sounds familiar to you, it's helpful to find the middle ground to support change and take a few small but consistent steps towards what you really want.

In this newsletter I want to share some tried and tested ways to help you reprogram your thinking and get your 2018 off to an amazing start.

Let's get you started on this journey...

The very first step to getting what you want and to making 2018 your best year ever is to DREAM.

This step is the most important.  As I mentioned before, if you don't know where you are going you're unlikely to ever get there.  You have to DREAM your new reality.

Ask yourself:

What do I really want in my life this year? And when the little voice comes in to say, "I can't have that because"...take time to quieten that voice and keep dreaming and wishing for everything you really want.

Why do I want this - what difference will this make in my life?  Imagine yourself living your life as though you already have this thing.  Take time to DREAM and notice how are you now thinking, feeling and behaving as well as what are others around you are noticing that's different about you now that you have this thing.

Go on - DREAM...

After dreaming your best year yet, you need to PLAN IT.  When you plan it you break down your vision and get it into bite-sized chunks that'll give you measurable steps along the way.

Let me explain...

If you're thinking "I want to feel healthier" - for this to become reality, the idea needs more work.  It's not chunked down enough.  You're unlikely to achieve such a vague goal.

You need to ask yourself - what is healthier?  What do I mean by healthier?  Do I want to look after me by reducing my blood pressure, by walking more each day, drinking more water or wearing smaller size clothes?

Once you've got down to the specifics, ask yourself why you want this?  Is it to feel confident in yourself and feel more comfortable moving around with no aches and pains?  Or is there another reason?  PLAN IT...and write it down.

Once you've written it down, invest time to decide how are you going to do this.  List every option and all the ways that you can. Ask friends and family how they might do it (if you're happy to share your idea with them).  You might be surprised at how supportive they can be.

And finally, identify what are you committing to doing each day to move you towards what you really want.  Set timescales and check in dates along the way.  Establish what support you need.  Celebrate your daily achievements and give yourself praise for your milestones.  Be flexible and allow for change along the way.

Go ahead and PLAN IT...

The final step in this process is DO IT.  But be ready for barriers.  Of course you will come up against barriers - you probably know what they'll be, so plan for them.  At the PLAN IT stage, make a list of your potential barriers and plan for ways to overcome them.

There will also be distractions.  Distractions are everywhere.  Take time to notice them, list them and once you're aware of them, be firm and clear - avoid them and keep moving towards what you really want.

And last but by no means least, get the support of a partner, a friend, a family member or coach along the way to help you get there.

As you go on your journey, evaluate the changes you're making and keep an eye on how you get there.  But what ever happens, keep taking action steps every day and celebrate your achievements along the way.

2018 is filled with opportunity and joy and it's yours for the taking.

Got teens facing exam stress?

Most teens have prelims coming up ahead of the summer exams.  There is still lots of time to get a great outcome.  Remember that results are not all based on academic skill.  Stress really affects your capacity to learn and store information. Stress causes procrastination and often leads to putting study plans off.
